  • Never carry handfuls that make it difficult for you to walk or that inhibit you from quickly unlocking your door and entering your home. It’s better to take many smaller handfuls in, than a couple of large trips that make you slower and keep you from paying attention to your surroundings.
  • Do not leave your car unlocked when walking back and forth to your house. On the same note, don’t leave your house unlocked unless there is someone attending the unlocked door.
  • When leaving your house to enter your car, look underneath your car from a distance to make sure no one, or nothing unexpected, is hiding underneath your car. Also, check the passenger’s side floor and the backseat to ensure there are no predators that have entered your vehicle. To avoid a risk of this, always lock your car doors when you exit your car.
  • If your vehicle has an opening between the trunk and the interior of the car, make sure to keep your trunk locked and the access locked unless you are using it.
  • Purchase a car with headlights that remain on for a timed period after the car is turned off. Having headlights that keep your front entrance lit while you enter can help you see your way in, and also help you see anything unexpected.
  • If you generally travel alone, invest in some pepper spray and a flashlight to hook onto your keychain.
  • Always keep your front porch light on if you travel after dark, or plan to arrive home after dark.
  • If someone is home when you arrive, have them open the door for you, so that any predators outside are able to see you aren’t going into an empty house. If you are going into an empty house, be aware of your surroundings. If possible, have a trusted neighbor walk you inside if you sense a threat.
