Daytime Burglaries

Though you make picture burglars prowling after dark, in recent years there has been a dramatic increase in daylight home robberies. Even though daytime robberies seem like they would be risky for criminals, burglars have told the police that it’s easier to get into homes during the day. Burglars can watch a family leave and know that no one will be home for hours. Even homeowners with alarm systems may not set them during typical day-to-day schedules. By pretending they are a repairman or delivering a package, burglars fly under the radar of suspicious neighbors. An empty house with no alarm is an open invitation to a burglar.

Some of their tricks include:

 

  • Calling your home phone to see if anyone answers.
  • Checking all open windows to see if anyone is home, including a large dog.
  • Becoming familiar with your area.
  • Checking for cars in the driveway, and lights or noise inside the house.

 

During the daylight hours, these are all relatively easy things to accomplish. So if you have a home that is left empty during the day, take a few precautions:

 

  • Make sure your curtains and blinds are all closed.
  • Know your mail person, your delivery people, and alert a neighbor if you are supposed to have someone coming to repair something in your home. That way, if somebody comes and the neighbors aren’t expecting it, they will know to alert the authorities.
  • Park your cars inside your garage. If burglars can’t see your cars, it makes it hard to know whether anyone is home or not.
  • Get a dog, leave a radio on, leave a light on or use timers to turn lights off and on.
