  • Always keep cleaning products and other chemical products far above where little arms can reach.
  • Don't fill the bathtub and leave it unattended. Even a few inches of water can be deadly to a baby or toddler. Stay with children while they are in the tub.
  • If you are a family that owns firearms or weapons of any kind, always keep them unloaded, and out of reach. Invest in a safe or a lockbox.
  • If you have a house with stairs, block access until your child is old enough to travel up and down them without assistance. The effort to step over a baby gate is well worth the protection it offers.
  • Watch out for potential choking hazards. If an object can fit through the tube from the inside of a toilet paper roll, then it is small enough to pose a choking danger to a child.
  • If you have pets, make sure to keep them up to date on their vaccines, and also make sure they are trained not to jump on small children
  • Always use outlet covers. Kids will stick anything they find into an outlet, and the shock can be deadly.
  • Make sure your doors and windows stay locked. Keep strangers out and keep curious children and toddlers indoors. If your toddler is tall enough to reach the door locks, install a set of locks at a higher location on the door.
  • Always be prepared for an emergency situation, and make sure your children know what to do in all emergencies. Plan out a fire route, teach the kids their address and how to dial 911. Make sure you have a trusted neighbor where kids can seek help in an emergency
  • Make a kit for emergency situations (water, first aid, blankets, canned food, back-up cell phone with emergency numbers already plugged in, extra set of car keys, etc), and change the kit based on the season.
