Crime peaks during the holiday season as more people are away from home and piles of gifts and empty houses create easy targets for criminals.

  • Don't let mail or newspapers stack up outside your door. Call to have deliveries halted while you are out of town, or ask a neighbor or family member to stop by, pick up the mail and check on the house while you are away.
  • Do maintain your yard while you are gone. Hire someone to mow your yard while you are away, pick up branches, and keep your driveway and steps free of debris.
  • Do set your lights on timers. Put indoor lights on random timers, and set exterior lights to come on at night. Leaving lights on 24/7 signals burglars that no one is home.
  • Do board pets or leave them with a friend or neighbor. Unless you have someone who can stay with pets and house sit, too, having people coming and going to check on your pets can tell burglars that you are out of town. And even the best pet-sitter may leave a door unlocked in the hurry of feeding pets and letting them in and out.
  • Do close blinds and curtains so no one can look inside and see an empty house.
